Get involved in International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD)

  • November 30, 2022

This month, we want to come together and encourage others to ‘see the ability in disability’ as we celebrate International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) on Saturday, 3 December.

Held annually, IDPwD is a United Nations observed day celebrated internationally. Its goal is to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability and to celebrate global achievements of people with disability – something we at Living My Way strive to do daily.

The Australian Government has supported IDPwD since 1996 and provides funds to promote and raise awareness of the Day around Australia.

Each year the UN announces a theme to observe for International Day of People with Disability. The theme for IDPwD 2022 is Transformative solutions for inclusive development: the role of innovation in fuelling an accessible and equitable world. The annual theme and observance of the Day aim to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilise support for the dignity, rights and well-being of people with disabilities.

An international commemoration will be held in New York on Monday, 5 December, 2022, between 9:00 am – 12:00 pm. (EST- New York time) Register Here

The 2022 global observance to commemorate the International Day of People with Disabilities will be around the overarching theme of innovation and transformative solutions for inclusive development, covering in three different interactive dialogues the following thematic topics:

  • Innovation for disability-inclusive development in employment: this dialogue will discuss the linkages between employment, knowledge and skills required to access employment in an innovative, rapidly changing technological landscape to all and how assistive technologies can increase accessibility to employment and be mainstreamed in the workplace.
  • Innovation for disability-inclusive development in reducing inequality: this dialogue will discuss innovations, practical tools and good practices to reduce inequalities in both public and private sectors, which are disability-inclusive and interested in promoting diversity in the workplace.
  • Innovation for disability-inclusive development: sport as an exemplar case: a sector where all of these aspects coalesce; sport as a good practice example and a site of innovation, employment and equity.

“Storytelling is how we invite our Member voices to shine and share something meaningful… We want to inspire, engage and educate our community through real stories.”

“We all pitch in to get things done. I would say, hand on heart, that the people we employ are truly Memberfocused and understand how their role can help Members meet their aspirations.”
