My name is Kane. I was 27 when I had the accident and I spent 10 months in hospital and it’s been 19 months now since the injury. They called an emergency ambulance from St. George Hospital. So police and ambulance for myself within under 15 minutes.
Paramedics told my mum as well that if I wasn’t found within half an hour, I would have bled out. Recovery has been absolutely amazing. No one that falls three and a half stories onto the head recovers as quick as I have. The biggest change since my accident is I have a different perspective on life. I appreciate life way more now and I don’t take life for granted as much as I did before the injury.
People that have similar injuries to me never come back from the injuries. Well, the day I got out of hospital, it was just, finally like this is over. I’m finally out of here. That was my biggest goal like getting out of hospital, getting back to normal life. Looking back on my journey, the thing that I’m most proud of is never giving up on myself, never giving up on my recovery, always pushing through as hard as it might have been.
My family never gave up on me. My life’s different. I have a permanent brain injury for the rest of my life. I needed to have a different perspective on life. I need to appreciate life more and change my life completely. If I met someone that had a brain injury that was in the similar situation that I was in the start, I would tell them never give up on your recovery. Living My Way has supported me through my journey from the start to where we’re at now through Support Coordination, and sorting everything out for us. There’s a lot living My Way has done for me through my recovery.

"Since I started supporting Kane, I've seen amazing amount of progress. He goes to all his appointments. He goes to the gym. I'm really impressed, to be honest. He got back into bodyboarding, which was one of your goals, and you did that. Every goal he set, he's hit, it’s really impressive. I'm very excited for Kane's future goals and plans."

Kane and his Support Coordinator, Mia
Mia: My name is Mia, and I work with Living My Way as a Support Coordinator, and my job is to help NDIS participants implement their plans. So the key steps I’ve taken to support Kane and his family – I got all the reports from his doctors, and his allied health clinicians. They recommended OT, physio, support workers. I would speak to Karen and Kane, and understand what they actually wanted to engage with. Since I started supporting Kane, I’ve seen an amazing amount of progress. He goes to all his appointments. He goes to the gym. I’m really impressed with him to be honest. Got back into body boarding, which is one of your goals, and you did that. Every goal he set, he’s hit. It’s really impressive. I’m very excited for Kane’s future goal and plans. I think he has a body boarding competition he wants to do soon. Going back to work. That will be really nice, to see how Kane goes back
to work.

Mia: Your mum likes that one.
