Jamie was desperate to have his own say in how he was cared for and so were we.
But we couldn’t find anything anywhere until we discovered Living My Way. At first, it was a bit daunting and scary, because we had to employ our own staff, but we were convinced they’d help us through it all.
Jamie’s NDIS reviews have been a roller coaster of change and uncertainty. I’ve stayed vigilant escalating things with the NDIS when needed. Living My Way has been right there with us and whenever I need help, I just pick up the phone. Having a team who knows so much has changed everything. They can guide us through reviews and always share their perspective with compassion.
Eventually it was Jamie who said, “I think I should move into my own independent home.”
It was a huge step and the transition wasn’t easy. We tried different options, had setbacks and it was a gamble, but eventually we found the right place. Now Jamie lives in a beautiful home with a big bedroom and three wonderful roommates who he gets along with so well.
The first three months after he moved out were an adjustment. As carers you don’t often get the chance to simply be Mum or Dad. I joined a gym and started going three times a week, and I’m loving it.
“When we visit Jamie now, it’s parent and son time, not carer time and we couldn’t be happier.”
It’s a year since Jamie moved out and he loves it. I organised a cake to celebrate, and I just saw the photo, and he looks so happy. They just love him.
Out of every negative comes a positive. I live my life every day like that.
